Bayonetta 3 was announced in 2017, but the development was delayed.

According to former Game Informer editor Imran Khan, the game had to wait five years because PlatinumGames planned to add a semi-open world to it, but later abandoned this idea.

"It should have been more like Astral Chain than NieR: Automata. The idea was that the hub world would send Bayonetta (or someone else) to different worlds that would be open enough by themselves.

Probably Super Mario 64 will be a good example for this," Khan writes in a weekly newsletter on Patreon.

The team did a lot of work and experimented for a long time, but everything fell apart when it came to the pace of the narrative. Eventually, Nintendo asked to reject it.

In addition, the game in a semi-open world did not work very well on the Nintendo Switch hardware. Khan notes that "there are still many elements of the previous level design in the final version."

For example, the central world of Fula "is divided into small parts, along which Bayonetta and Viola move to get to other dimensions." Bayonetta 3 was released on October 28 on the Nintendo Switch.

The project received high marks from both critics and players.
