Netflix is going to open a new studio and appoint former Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny as its head.
This was announced by Vice President of Games Mike Verdoux during an interview at the TechCrunch Disrupt event.
Sonny left Blizzard in September 2021 during a massive exodus, which was accompanied by a scandal and a press alert. The former employee himself said that he was quitting for the sake of rest.
Apparently, now the vacation has come to an end, and Sony will head the fifth Netflix studio, which will be located in Southern California.
"We are opening another studio in Southern California, this time led by Chacko Sonny, who directed the production of God of War Ascenion for Santa Monica and managed their portfolio of games, and then served as executive producer of a small game franchise called Overwatch," laughs Verdoux.
"He could have gone anywhere, he could have done anything, but he decided to come here. We're building a team around him and we hope he'll reinvent what games can be."
Last month, Netflix announced the opening of a studio in Helsinki. The Finnish studio was headed by the former general manager of Zynga Helsinki, Marko Lastika.
