Ubisoft has introduced Ghostwriter, a new artificial intelligence—based tool designed to help screenwriters.

Ubisoft Ghostwriter will be used to create draft versions of conversations in crowds of people and replicas of NPCs.

Despite the fact that these sounds and phrases play a central role in immersing gamers in game worlds, Ubisoft said that using AI for such tasks will allow narrative teams to pay less attention to repetitive things and focus on more important work.

The technology was developed by Ubisoft's La Forge division, responsible for creating technical prototypes based on "the most advanced scientific research."

"Introducing Ubisoft Ghostwriter, an artificial intelligence tool developed in—house, which is designed to support our screenwriters by generating the first sketches of phrases or sounds made by NPCs when players interact with the game world."

"This tool was developed in collaboration with screenwriters to create more realistic interactions with NPCs by generating dialogue variations.

See how our teams will use AI to solve repetitive tasks and free up time to work on other key elements of the game," the video says.

After the first news about Ubisoft Ghostwriter appeared, many game developers negatively perceived the company's plans on social networks and urged it to invest better in the human labor of screenwriters.

Sony Santa Monica creative director Corey Barlog reacted to Ubisoft's announcement with a gif with a perplexed Kratos, and the studio's screenwriter Alana Pierce said that the need to edit dialogues created by artificial intelligence would take much more time than simply writing your own lines.

In her opinion, instead of spending the budget on developing such tools, AAA studios should hire more screenwriters.
