Creative director and founder of NetherRealm Studios Ed Boone said in an interview with IGN that the Injustice series is not abandoned.

Despite the development and continued support of Mortal Kombat 1, the team hopes to return to the franchise based on DC comics.

The first part of the series called Injustice: Gods Among Us was released in 2013 — almost ten years have passed since its release.

Nevertheless, the developers were not going to take on two games at the same time, because, according to Boone, the parallel creation of projects could provoke the transfer of Mortal Kombat 1.

"There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, others probably shouldn't. We switched to the new Unreal graphics engine, and we were careful during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There were a lot of variables involved, and eventually we realized that it would be nice to make another Mortal Kombat with the hope of someday returning to Injustice."

The Injustice sequel was released in 2017 and offered fans a faster and deeper gameplay. As for Mortal Kombat 1, its release is scheduled for September 19, 2023.
