Square Enix has confirmed that the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI role-playing game does not use the Luminous Engine. Moreover, it is not Unreal Engine.

The information was revealed in a recent preview of the project from the blogger Skill Up, who turned to Square Enix with a question about the FFXVI game engine.

The company declined to name the technology behind Final Fantasy XVI, but confirmed that it is not the Luminous Engine or Unreal Engine.

For reference, the Luminous Engine was used in Final Fantasy XV and the recent Forespoken, and the engine itself is a proprietary development of Square Enix and its internal studio Luminous Productions.

In turn, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion were built on the basis of Unreal Engine.

Since it is currently unknown exactly which engine Square Enix used for FFXVI, some fans believe that it may be Crystal Tools, which runs another game in the series, Final Fantasy XIV.

FFXVI is released on June 22 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
