Co-founder and president of Oddworld Inhabitants, Lorne Lanning, complained that adding Oddworld: Soulstorm to the PlayStation Plus as one of the monthly handouts turned out to be "devastating" for the game's sales.

Speaking this week in the podcast Xbox Expansion Pass, the veteran developer said that they expected to sell 50-100 thousand copies of Oddworld: Soulstorm at the start and did not expect that interest in the game by subscription would be high due to the shortage of PS5, which would benefit them, but as a result, the game was taken away through PS Plus more than 4 million times. Lanning believes that the studio lost profit because the unexpectedly high popularity of the game in the Sony service ate potential sales.

He pointed out that the story of the deal was a "double-edged stick", as without Sony it was not according to which the game was to be released in January 2021 and distributed by subscription for a month.

Initially, the studio had doubts about the agreement related to the low availability of PS5 in the market, but the developers were hit by the consequences of the pandemic and there was a need for funds to complete the game. So when Sony paid them off, the team decided they made a good deal.

"In January, we thought we would never be able to sell more than we are now, and the maximum we could sell would be less than the money we could get [for the PS Plus release], so we made a deal."

Then, due to the pandemic, there was a delay and the release moved to April, but the deal still january] there were not so many consoles to get a free game, but as the release moved to April, Oddworld: Soulstorm became the most downloaded game on PlayStation 5. It came close to four million downloads or so, but it was essentially free copies, since everyone was subscribed. It turned out to be a disaster for us, but this is how the economy works. "

At the end of last year, Oddworld: Soulstorm received an extended edition and was released on Xbox consoles.
