Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said that games do not necessarily have to be released on a Game Pass subscription to have a chance to become successful on Xbox consoles.

During a conversation on GDC with Xbox colleague Sarah Bond, the head of the division said that developers often ask him about whether they should release their games on Xbox if they are not presented in the Game Pass.

According to him, Xbox does not have any winning business model, and if the game does not appear in the subscription, it does not mean that it becomes unviable on the platform. Retail sales remain an important part of the business, and the company will continue to invest in it, as in other distribution models, including subscription and Free-to-Play.

Xbox side is the variety of business models and their effectiveness. Thanks to this, as he noted, a lot of great games appear on the platform, which would otherwise probably never have been created.

The Xbox Game Pass was launched in 2017. As of early 2021, its user base is more than 25 million subscribers.
