The "triumphant return of E3" announced last year was in jeopardy, as all three platform holders refused to take part in the upcoming exhibition.

According to IGN sources, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are not planning to hold any presentations under the E3 brand and are not going to pay for the rental of exhibition space.

The latter may become especially painful for the organizers, since E3 2023 for the first time in the last four years should return to the traditional physical format and become a kind of gaming festival designed for tens of thousands of visitors.

Platform holders have always rented the largest areas at E3 — ever since the time when the exhibition was closed to ordinary players and focused exclusively on journalists and industry figures.

It is worth noting that Sony has stopped appearing at E3 in any form since 2019 — before the coronavirus pandemic. Nintendo and Microsoft continued to support the organizers.

According to sources, many companies have long come to the conclusion that E3 has lost its meaning — it has been replaced by digital presentations and traditional gaming festivals that are organized in different parts of the world.

Directly in the USA, the E3 brand in recent years has begun to fade into the shadows amid the growing popularity of Summer Game Fest by the organizer of The Game Awards, Jeff Cayley.

In the summer of 2023, Cayley plans to bring Summer Game Fest from the digital field to the physical for the first time — in fact, he is preparing a direct competitor to E3.

At the moment, it is unknown whether the platform holders will take part in the Summer Game Fest 2023.

So far, only Microsoft has confirmed that it will hold its own presentation from Los Angeles in June.
