Last Tuesday, Blizzard presented the Overwatch 2 roadmap and shared information about the PvE mode, which in the end will not come out the way it was promised at the announcement.

In particular, it was decided to abandon the skill leveling system and move on to small story missions.

The players were enraged by this news, which is why the shooter's game director, Aaron Keller, had to explain the situation.

His message says that the new content will be twice as great as what was in the first part.

The game director said that the Overwatch team was originally founded after the cancellation of the FPS MMO genre game codenamed Project Titan.

When she started developing an online shooter, she always had a plan to return to old ideas. The authors followed the strategy of "crawl, walk, run".

"With Overwatch, we started crawling, with the creation of PvE, we started walking, and with the introduction of MMO elements— we started running.

This has been in the DNA of the team from the very beginning, and some of us consider the final game [Overwatch] to be a true realization of the original vision of Project Titan."

The team has always been passionate about this concept, and in the early stages tried to fully master it.

But the scale began to grow every year, so it became impossible to do several things at once at the same time.

The developers were able to recreate the system of leveling the skills of heroes, new opponents and several missions, but they failed to reunite these elements into one.

Answering the question of why the team revealed this only closer to the middle of 2023, Keller admits that after the release of Overwatch 2, the studio began discussing plans for the future.

Over time, there were more and more of them, which led to the decision to abandon the original plans to create hero missions.

Upcoming story missions about the battle of Overwatch heroes with the Zero Sector organization will take place on huge maps with new enemies and cinematic clips.

The game director assured that the developers have done a wonderful job.

New information will be shared in the coming weeks, and the missions themselves will appear in the sixth season, which starts in August.

"It was hard for us, but as the director of this project, I have to do my best to make decisions that put the game and the community first, even if those decisions are disappointing.

In this case, it was hard for me to give up a vision that just didn't work. And for that, I would like to apologize to our players and our team.

I'm sorry."
