Developers of The Callisto Protocol explained why horror will not appear in Xbox Game Pass on the release

The upcoming space horror of The Callisto Protocol will not appear in the catalog of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on the release, although the developers have considered this possibility.

Mark James, Technical Director of Striking Distance Studios, spoke about this in a recent interview.

The developer believes that linear single-user projects from third-party studios are difficult to become financially successful when added to subscription services, so players should not expect that the new horror will be there in the next few years.

"You will pass The Callisto Protocol once, and what next? I think that such services are focused on games with the open world and rehearsal multiplayer projects.

This is the right service for them,  ”noted the developer.

"As an employee of an independent third-party studio, it is really difficult for me to imagine a successful linear game from a third party, created not on the money of platform owners, within the framework of these services.

I'm not saying never; but from a financial point of view, we have little benefit in adding The Callisto Protocol at the start. ”

James noted that Microsoft can afford to add its own single-player games to the Xbox Game Pass on release, and he is confident that it will continue to do so given its financial capabilities.

But for the rest of us, it's a controversial moment. The Callisto Protocol is released on December 2 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
