The creator of the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, said in a Famitsu survey, which the magazine's staff traditionally conducts among Japanese developers at the end of the year, that he is currently working on a new game in the dark fantasy genre.
Sakaguchi noted that he initially considered the possibility of retirement, but instead decided to finally try to devote time to another completely new project.

After the premiere of The Last Story for Wii, all of Sakaguchi's games were released on mobile platforms. The latest one released at the moment, Fantasia, is an exclusive of the Apple Arcade service.
