- off for mobile platforms, which explores a new and unusual genre for the series - RPG.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is described as a strategic collectible role-playing game and the first mobile cinematic story game of the franchise, in which gamers will have to assemble a team of fighters from a huge number of characters and fight them in large-scale group battles in real time to stop a dark and dangerous threat wreaking havoc in all kingdoms.

NetherRealm Studios itself is responsible for the development and publishing of the project.

Creative director of the studio and one of the creators of the franchise, Ed Boone, commented on the announcement with the following words:"We are expanding the boundaries of Mortal Kombat so that players can take a fresh look at the franchise, while remaining true to its inner core.

In Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we have reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collectible role-playing game with a fast pace and group hand-to-hand battles that should appeal to both new and existing fans."

The game is scheduled for release in 2023. There is no trailer and gameplay yet - only a poster has been published.
