In December 2022, it became known that a member of the US Congress, Lori Trahan, sent a letter to major gaming companies requesting information about their fight against extremism in multiplayer games.

The corporate responses were disappointing for the authors of the initiative.

Trahan notes that gaming companies do not respond well enough to the growth of extremism in online communities, do not sufficiently protect marginalized groups of users and have problems with transparency in explaining their actions.

9 out of 14 companies did not describe their policies or actions that they apply to specifically assess and eliminate extremist content; 7 out of 14 companies did not mention how they interact with marginalized and at-risk communities that suffer most from hatred and harassment on the Internet; 8 out of 14 companies did not provide or refused to provide a transparent reporting on the spread of harassment and extremist content in their games.

Sony talked about informing players and their parents about the safety rules in PlayStation services, and also recalled a joint initiative with Microsoft and Nintendo to create a safe online community of players.

Microsoft Gaming, in turn, talked about special Xbox account options that allow you to configure various filters.

This was not enough for Trahan — she believes that the problem of extremism in online games needs to be constantly reminded.

Many people do not read the community rules at all and do not use any settings. Some manufacturers took the legislators' request more seriously than others.

Innersloth, the smallest company of the 14 that received the request, described a powerful community engagement program designed to engage with those most affected by hate and harassment.

In turn, the authors of Roblox talked about partnerships with a number of online security organizations.

The developers intend to follow a clear policy of combating extremism and make more efforts to comply with security rules.
