Microsoft has announced a decision to increase the cost of the Xbox Series X|S in Japan from February 17.
The recommended retail price of the Xbox Series X will rise from 54,978 yen to 59,978 yen, and the Xbox Series S will rise from 32,278 yen to 37,978 yen.
In both cases, the consoles will go up by 5,000 yen. Microsoft noted that the decision was "not easy" for it, but it was dictated by the new economic realities on the market.
"After careful consideration of the situation in the Japanese market, we decided to change the recommended retail price of Xbox consoles in this country.
We regularly monitor the situation on the markets in order to maintain reasonable consistency in prices between regions.
We understand that the changes will affect our customers, and it was a difficult decision for us," the message says.
The Xbox team stressed that it will continue to work at full capacity, delighting fans with new interesting games and improvements to the Xbox Game Pass service.
It is worth noting that earlier the PlayStation 5 also rose in price in Japan by 5 thousand yen — this happened last fall.
In parallel, Sony has raised the prices of the console in the UK, EU countries and China. The former value has been preserved only in the USA.
Microsoft replied that it does not plan to follow in the footsteps of a competitor yet, but in December announced a decision to raise the cost of games from internal studios in 2023.
In Europe and the USA, the prices for the Xbox Series X|S remain unchanged for the time being.
