The creators of The Long Dark talked about the current state of affairs in a realistic survival game and about their plans for the development of the game. This story was timed to coincide with the imminent anniversary of the creation of the company: Hinterland Studio Inc. was founded almost ten years ago.
During this time, the developers ran a successful Kickstarter The Long Dark campaign, released the game in early access, introduced the players to the Wintermute story campaign, remade it for the Redux edition, announced the official release, released three more episodes, and continued to develop the survival mode. And all this was done in the form of free updates.
A survey in The Long Dark community showed that almost 80% of players agree to see paid add-ons for the sandbox. But this was previously impossible due to the scale of the game and the fact that the story and the survival mode were inseparably linked. And the team had to spend months trying to separate the content of different modes.
Now that Wintermute episodes and Survival Mode can be updated and developed independently, the developers are ready to move on to a new stage. Owners of the game will receive the final episode for free, as previously planned, but fans of the sandbox are in for a new era of development.
Already this year, the developers plan to release the first paid content for survival mode. The details are not yet final, but players will have something like a season pass with a paid update period of 15-18 months. It will probably be divided into three or four separate content sets.
Paid updates will include new regions, challenges, mechanics, and more. They will be accompanied by free improvements to the core systems, so existing The Long Dark players won't feel left out.
In the coming months, the developers promise to reveal more details about the planned paid content. As for the final episode of Wintermute, work on it continues, the release should take place in 2023.
